About Pilot Assistance

ALPA is dedicated to promoting its members’ professional performance, health and welfare, and when necessary, rehabilitation through drug and alcohol intervention. Pilot Assistance coordinates and conducts research to address those physical and emotional issues that may affect a pilot’s ability to perform his or her work. Pilot Assistance is involved with IFALPA committees, government and industry panels, and other professional associations, while coordinating the activities of the Aeromedical, Human Intervention and Motivation Study (HIMS), Critical Incident Response Program (CIRP), Canadian Pilot Assistance, and the Professional Standards Groups.

ALPA’s Pilot Assistance provides confidential guidance and help to pilots having difficulty in any aspect of their professional or personal life that may affect job performance or professionalism. The cornerstone to the success of Pilot Assistance lies in specialized listening skills that volunteers learn during initial and recurrent training. Our volunteers are trained and ready to help the pilot maintain his or her position on their respective airline seniority list and on the flight deck.

The ALPA Emergency Relief Fund, or Pilots for Pilots (P4P), is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity created to offer financial assistance to ALPA pilots and their dependents to cover the immediate, extraordinary expenses that follow widespread, catastrophic events. You can help by donating to the fund or simply by shopping via the Amazon link at https://smile.amazon.com/ch/14-1936814.

The subject of confidentiality is not exclusive to the Professional Standards Committee, but rather is a hallmark of all of the Pilot Assistance Committees. For any of these committees to be effective, confidentiality must be a top priority. One of the selection criteria of volunteers is a high level of integrity and professionalism. If you or someone you know is interested in volunteering, please fill out a “volunteer here” form on the MEC website and select the committee you are interested in.
